Rumors of a live-action remake of Disney’s Tangled have taken off over the past few months, and many fans have shared their dream casting suggestions for who should star. Now, Zachary Levi is sharing his pick for who might be right to take on the role of Flynn Rider.
Levi walked the carpet at the premiere of his new film, Harold and the Purple Crayon, in Culver City, California, on Sunday, and he spoke with ET’s Denny Directo about what young star might be right to step into the dashing rogue’s live-action shoes.
“I mean, he’s already getting every other job but probably Timothee Chalamet?” suggested Levi, who voiced the character in Disney’s 2010 classic retelling of the Rapunzel fairytale. “Unfortunately I feel like I’m a little old — and that I don’t know all of the younger actors that could be that guy.”
Chalamet recently starred in the musical Wonka, playing iconic magical chocolatier Willy Wonka in his youth, and is portraying a young Bob Dylan in the forthcoming biopic, A Complete Unknown, currently in production.
Mandy Moore, who voiced Rapunzel, previously told Bustle that she could see Sabrina Carpenter take on the iconic fairy tale princess. However, Levi shared his idea for how he and Moore could still make an appearance in the possible remake.
“I think it would be fun if Mandy and I got to be Rapunzel’s parents,” Levi shared. “I think that would be a really fun little cameo for us to pop in to.”
While Disney has not released any official announcements regarding the production of a live-action retelling of Tangled, interest has picked up steam in the Disney fan community and Levi said he thinks “it’s wonderful.”
“I’m so proud of that movie I’m so grateful that I got to be a part of it,” he shared. “I always dreamed about being in a Disney animated musical and then I got to be in one! And not just any one, like, I think it’s one of the best ones that there is.”
“I was bummed that we never got a sequel to it, but we did get to do a really fun animated series that was on Disney Channel for three years,” added Levi — who voiced Flynn in Tangled: The Series on Disney Channel, alongside Moore. “Now that there’s talks of doing this live-action — I think it’s awesome, and I look forward to, you know, seeing how well that comes together.”
Meanwhile, Levi will soon be seen in Harold and the Purple Crayon, a big-screen adaptation and reimagining of Crockett Johnson’s iconic 1955 children’s book of the same name.
The film is all about imagination, inspiration and finding a spark of creative joy in life — and in Levi’s life, the actor said he finds a source of inspiration in his young nephews.
“I just think that when you’re looking for reasons why to keep investing in yourself to keep loving yourself, to keep investing in this world and making it a better place, and you’re struggling [to feel] that in yourself, well then you have to look at the younger generation and what we’re leaving them,” said Levi, who was joined by two of his nephews at Sunday’s premiere.
Levi praised them for their “boundless optimism and love” and explained, “They just always instill that, more of that, in me.”
Harold and the Purple Crayon — co-starring Benjamin Bottani, Lil Rel Howery, Zooey Deschanel, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds and Alfred Molina — hits theaters Aug. 2.
