Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are just one day away from the conclusion of their intense campaigns, getting ready for the final ballots to be cast.
Nearly 78 million people have already voted, but the outcome of the presidential race remains too close to call. Here’s an overview of their current standings and the final activities of their campaigns.
What Are the Latest Updates from the Polls?
Trump and Harris are in a tight race across seven key battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, with candidates frequently alternating their lead based on the latest polls.
As of Nov. 4, FiveThirtyEight’s daily election poll tracker shows Harris’s lead is continuously shrinking down nationally from 1.4 percentage points last week.
A recent New York Times/Siena poll, released on Sunday, shows Harris pulling ahead of Trump in North Carolina and Wisconsin. Trump continues to lead in Arizona, while the candidates are effectively tied in Pennsylvania, each receiving 48 percent of the vote.
In crucial states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nevada—together holding 51 electoral votes—the candidates are nearly tied, with less than half a percentage point separating them. Winning all four states could effectively secure the presidency for either Trump or Harris.
What Is the Electoral College?
The Electoral College is a process in which electors, or representatives from each state based on its population, cast their votes to determine the president. Each state has a specific number of electors based on its Congressional representation, totaling 538 electors. After the general election, each elector casts one vote, and the candidate who receives more than half (270) wins.
The newly elected President and Vice President are inaugurated in January.
What’s Happening on the Campaign Trail?
On Sunday, Harris campaigned in Michigan, while Trump focused his efforts on North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.
On Monday, Harris is spending the day in Pennsylvania, joined by several celebrities—including Lady Gaga, Ricky Martin, Just Blaze, and Oprah Winfrey—at a Get Out the Vote event in Philadelphia tonight. She will also campaign alongside D-Nice, Katy Perry, and Andra Day in Pittsburgh.
Meanwhile, Trump started his day in North Carolina before heading to Pennsylvania. He plans to conclude his campaign with a late-night rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he celebrated his 2016 victory and returned in 2020.
