The allegations pointed out a specific trainee.
Netizens have discussed their suspicions about HYBE‘s treatment of a survival show contestant.
In June 2023, the survival program R U NEXT? introduced viewers to 22 talented trainees competing to debut as part of BE:LIFT Labs‘ new girl group.
The show’s winning participants have since debuted as ILLIT, with several fan favorites not making it into the group.
One such trainee was Chanelle, now known as FIFTYFIFTY‘s Chanelle Moon.
Many questioned how Chanelle was eliminated from the show before the finale, as she often stood out due to her vocal skills. Recently, discussing a possible reason for her elimination became a hot topic.
A netizen on a Korean forum shared a clip of one of the performances from one of the units formed during an episode. In the unit were Chanelle Moon, Himena, Seoyeon, ILLIT’s Wonhee and Moka performing “5th Season” by OH MY GIRL.
The post also included comments from the video that called out the alleged editing of all the members of the unit’s vocals except Chanelle Moon, stating that only her voice could be heard wavering. The comments accused HYBE of editing another individual in the performance in an effort to “push” them.
- “No, it’s too obvious that the company is pushing a specific member. Why make it so obvious? Is the company only promoting that one member? It’s not about stage presence or skill differences; it’s just favoritism.”
- “It’s survival, so the position is supposed to go to the one who deserves it… but Moka kept applying and eventually got the position after a day of being rejected. This feels strange.”
- “When it comes to survival, isn’t skill the priority? If the member doesn’t deserve it, why push them forward like this? Feels unfair.”
- “They originally didn’t even think of debuting her. Other trainees with real skills were left out, and this member was just shoved to the front. Why pretend it’s a ‘survival’ show if the results are rigged from the start? It’s the most fake thing I’ve seen.”
- “How could Moka be considered weak when they already received special treatment? Seems like their position was guaranteed from the start.”
- “Why is there even special treatment in survival shows…?”
- “I heard the only guarantee was that they wouldn’t be eliminated…”
- “Some members don’t receive special treatment, but others do and are even guaranteed a position. It’s frustrating. They worked so hard only to see favoritism at play. Laughable.”
- “2:53 – Moka would never have made it on their own if it wasn’t for the support given. Even when they’re weak, they’re just placed in the spotlight. Even when they’re criticized, they’re saved from elimination… This is such a biased show.”
- “The only person benefiting from favoritism here is the one getting special treatment.”
- “There are plenty of people who could do well without favoritism. This is frustrating because, honestly, those who are more skilled and deserving have to watch this.”
Chanelle has since debuted as a member of FIFTYFIFTY, but many netizens couldn’t help but comment on situation, agreeing with the post.
- “This is the first time I’ve seen a survival show with such extreme editing, like R U NEXT?; I watched the whole thing, but honestly, it wasn’t enjoyable to watch.”
- “The editing was also malicious toward Chanel. I was rooting for Chanel, but after she got eliminated, I stopped watching.”
- “When you watch that show, you can clearly tell which members are the agency’s picks. They even edit them really favorably.”
- “Editing is usually done, but they went overboard with Wonhee and Moka.”
- “Wow, no wonder I only liked Chanel at that time. My eyes didn’t deceive me. You pathetic HYBE jerks… ;;;;;”
