Eminem‘s mother has passed away at the age of 69.
Multiple sources have confirmed Debbie Nelson died Monday night in St. Joseph, Missouri, from complications from lung cancer. Her battle with the disease was made public back in September. So sad…
To say Marshall Mathers and his mom didn’t get along would be wildly understating it. This is a woman immortalized on film in the cruel and selfish character Stephanie in 8 Mile, the fictionalized version of his life. A woman who sued her own son for defamation for rapping about their terrible relationship in Cleanin’ Out My Closet.

Eventually Debbie did try to reconcile with her son. In 2022 she posted a video to social media in which she congratulated him on his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. She told him:
“I love you very much. I knew you’d get there. It’s been a long ride. I’m very, very proud of you.”
In 2022, Debbie Nelson sent SHADYVERSE a video congratulating Eminem on his Rock Hall induction, her first public appearance in years. Sadly, this is now her last living footage. Heartbroken by her passing, and sending love to her family. Rest in peace, Debbie. ????️ pic.twitter.com/oLRvg1s7Bt

But of course she said this in a video sent to an Eminem fan account. So clearly she wasn’t able to reach out to him directly. We’re guessing they were still estranged.
We’re sending light and love to Eminem right now — even moreso due to his complicated relationship with his mom. Those family losses can sometimes hit the hardest.
