He just wanted to share his passion with his fans.
Recently, NCT DREAMS‘s Jaemin held a photo exhibition, Narcissism, to share his candid works with fans.
After a successful exhibition, an announcement was posted about making some of the pieces available for purchase. Although he announced his intentions to donate all the profits, the prices shocked many fans.
Prints of landscapes from his travels in the United States and Vietnam were priced at ₩850,000 KRW ($~615 USD), while prints of the members on tour went for ₩550,000 KRW ($~398 USD).
While many criticized the high prices, many fans requested people to read the fine print and understand the facts before making conclusions.
NCT’s Jaemin Invites Criticism With “Exorbitant Prices” For His Exhibition Photo Prints
In the announcement, it states that it will be sold to NCTzen DREAM membership only and will include Jaemin’s autograph and a guarantee card.
Fans also wanted to make it clear that it was the fans who requested he sell the photos first.
“Jaemin: It’s only been one day since the exhibition started, but you’re asking for me to sell the photos? You guys want the photos frames?
OP note: NCTzen’s request for them to be sold just one day after the exhibition.
Jaemin: But the prices will become expensive…
OP note: He prefaced that it would become expensive if he sold them.
Jaemin: I’m worried about that. If I sell it as a limited edition, there’s going to be an added premium…
OP note: He was worried about fans who might pay a premium to buy it from re-sellers.
Jaemin: There’s going to be an added premium even if I sell less. I’ll have to think about this some more. This might become a satan’s photo frame.”
Fans also emphasized the key points of the situation surrounding the photo exhibition to avoid misunderstanding.
- For about five years, he took pictures because he enjoyed it. He loved photos so much that about 3-4 years ago, he revealed that his dream is to open a photo exhibition someday.
- He was able to fulfill it this year and hold the photo exhibition (It was initially supposed to open in April but was pushed back three months).
- The photo exhibition ticket prices-> he wanted as many fans to see it as possible, so he discussed with SM to make it 10,000 KRW.
- Since the tickets were sold through Musinsa, he negotiated with the company so that international fans could also buy tickets.
- He prepared amazing gifts for those who won the book talk and sign event.
- He extended the exhibition dates for fans who couldn’t see it (the rental costs for the exhibition are really expensive).
Important points
- The exhibition photo limited edition sales were not part of the plan. They were prepared due to fans’ requests.
- He already prefaced that the prices would be expensive through Bubble.
- He worried about the added premium and continued to discuss it with the company.
- The photos would be sold to membership-only fans and include an original autograph and guarantee card, making them original artwork by a photographer.
- If you have a problem with it, you don’t need to purchase it.
- 100% of the profits will be donated. Do you think this is easy?
Fans were upset that people were quick to think that he was doing this just for the money.
If they just actually search on how much premium costumized frames cost they will never say anything. Some of this cost more than $400 per frames. This is how usually premium art frames cost. Jaemin’s frames are costumized so it’s more expensive not to mention the printing. https://t.co/T1rRHgAE9F pic.twitter.com/yLemWeHx09

jm worked hard to prepare the exhibition for the fans that were begging him to do it, the price is okay cause he’s donating it & if you’re broke then it isn’t jm’s problem, is not like he’s forcing you to buy; n e ways doesn’t matter how hard he works y’all are never satisfied https://t.co/qhzRWNlXay

they are professional and archival grade photos not your typical sintra board photos and A5 photo paper photos. Please understand the work, research and craftsmanship of the people who made this possible. https://t.co/D5dZZ0cP1G
