His social media activity has caused some buzz.
Around 10:25 PM on December 3, 2024 (KST), South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared on national television and declared “martial law” for the first time since 1979, only to withdraw it six hours later after severe backlash from the public and a successful National Assembly motion to nullify the order.
While the martial law declaration has caused significant disruptions in all aspects of the nation, including the entertainment industry, celebrities haven’t been as vocal in criticizing President Yoon as the general public. But it appears that BIGBANG‘s G-Dragon might have hinted at his stance.
On December 4, KST, writer Ha Sang Wook posted a picture of his poem on social media, which read, “Please, just go away on your own.” This line was taken from Ha’s poetry collection, Not Turning Off the Lights Before Lying on the Bed.
While the post didn’t directly mention President Yoon or the martial law declaration, given its timing, many understood it to be directed at Yoon Suk Yeol. It also reflected the growing calls for the South Korean President’s impeachment, both among the public and across political parties.
Interestingly, G-Dragon’s Instagram account was spotted among those who “liked” the post, leading to speculations that it was his way of showing support for the Korean public’s current sentiments.
While G-Dragon’s response might be speculative at best now, his music took center stage while the public dealt with the sudden shock of the martial law declaration. In the hours following the announcement, G-Dragon’s 2013 album Coup D’état became the top searched term on South Korean search engines. Keywords related to the album also dominated Melon‘s search rankings, becoming the most searched terms at that time.
Meanwhile, other idols like BIBI and MONSTA X‘s I.M. were somewhat unintentionally roped into the martial law declaration situation. Read more about it here.
